The ASF wants you, and the Incubator is here to help! This talk introduces the Apache Incubator, the entry point for projects wishing to join the ASF. The incubation process is explained from entry to graduation with examples from past projects.

Abstract

The Incubator project is the entry path into The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) for projects and codebases wishing to become part of the Foundation's efforts. This talk walks you through the entire incubation process, covering topics like:

  • Finding a Champion and preparing a project proposal
  • Recruiting mentors and getting initial feedback
  • Entering the Incubator
  • Setting up project infrastructure
  • Understanding CLAs, software grants and the Apache licensing model
  • Handling IP clearance and dealing with potential issues
  • Cutting Apache releases
  • Recruiting new contributors and committers
  • Understanding the roles of the project management committee and the PMC chair
  • Managing conflict and building consensus
  • Preparing for graduation
  • Life after graduation

Concrete examples from both successful and failed projects are used to illustrate key points and potential pitfalls.
