Description

Proposal of a redesign and reimplementation of the Impress slide show to make it a competitive application with smooth animations and good video support.

Abstract

The slideshow of Apache OpenOffice has many problems, among them are bad video and audio integration, clipping problems, slow or stuttering animations, missing text anti-aliasing, bad text animations and no 3D animations.

Many of these problems are caused by an implementation that is too closely tied to the file format. Many features like layers where added as an afterthought. The graphics system does not distinguish between content rendering and animation.

A redesign and reimplementation can solve most, if not all, of these shortcomings. A design that focuses an smooth animations and provides integration of audio and video and 3D, that has layer support built-in. It uses different approaches for content rendering and animations for both better visual results and hardware supported optimization of these very different tasks.
