Abstract

OpenOffice one of the biggest open source projects is now at Apache. This fact is still new and sometimes surprising to some people. The talk is intended to reflect the history of the project and especially the past 16 months under the umbrella of the Apache Software Foundation. What the project has achieved, what are the differences, what are the challenges and what could be the vision for the future. OpenOffice is the first software at Apache with such a huge end-user focus and with more than 100 million downloads before the transition to Apache were made. And the first release under the umbrella of Apache with more than 10 million downloads in 3 month continues the success of OpenOffice. But the underlying organization and the project management changed and every change includes changes in both directions. Things don't work as before and established processes have to be adapted or new defined. On the other side the project members get the complete control over the project and drive it forward in a meritocracy. Many challenges come up and have to be addressed in some way and this gives many, many volunteers the chance to participate actively in one of the biggest and most successful open source projects. The project is not only the software but more a healthy and vibrant community and where many people contribute to their preferred area and where they have the expertise. This talk will summarize what the community has achieved in the time under the Apache umbrella and will also show how you as individual can join the project as an active community member.
